Nottingham 4 Bournville 0
The 3rd team, buoyed with self belief after the previous weeks win over
Beeston took to a sandy Goosedale pitch in bright sunshine. An unchanged
starting XI faced a youthful Bournville side. From the start it was
clear that without the hard core of veterans of previous years, this
Bournville team were no match for Nottingham.
The 3rds defence, with Youngy and The Legend leading the way, were rock
solid. In midfield, Studley was revelling in his role as the enforcer
backing up Dirty Bon, whilst the Pimp continued his recent fine form
marauding down the right flank. Up front, the line of Crazy Frog Ben,
Burberry boy Ollie and teacher Jay bristled with the promise of goals.
Early chances came from surprising sources. Studley danced through the
Bournville defence and past the keeper, only to miss the ball as he
went for reverse stick glory. Next The Legend weaved his magic to find
himself in the ’D’ with a clear sight of goal. Sadly he
then did what he does best in such circumstances and the Bournville
keeper was untested by his effort.
20 minutes in and the best chance so far came and went. A short corner
was cleared only as far as Jonesy, who fired the ball back across goal.
The Skipper was there to deflect the ball to Jay waiting at the far
post. To be fair to Mr Byrne, this was harder chance than last week,
the ball moving at speed and coming to him while his stick was 6 inches
outside the post. Nonetheless, it was a chance he should have snaffled.
For the second week running it went begging, however, and Jay trotted
back up the pitch, the laughter of top scorer rival Rogers no doubt
ringing in his ears.
Finally the first goal arrived. The ball was well worked down the right
before being centred into the heart of the Bournville ’D’.
Dirty Bon swooped and although he mishit his shot the keeper and defence
were too far across to get back in time and it crept in at the far post.
Not long afterwards it was 2-0. Youngy created a goal straight from
the 4th team coaching manual, a quick aerial ball towards the ’D’
was seized on by Ollie, who took the ball wide of the despairing keeper
and coolly finished reverse stick, to take himself into the lead in
the golden mars bar race.
Half time and the talk was of not getting complacent and self indulgent.
Shortly after the restart the Pimp went on a self indulgent wobble along
the 3rds 25’ and complacently gave the ball away to allow Bournville
probably their best chance of the match. Fortunately that was not saying
much as Foggy was able to get through this game without having to save
a shot.
As if to make amends for his profligacy, the Pimp cranked his game up
to another level. Displaying skill, power and determination he scored
a fine solo goal to make it 3-0. One rest on the bench later and he
was back to score his second with another assured move. Further chances
were squandered, notably by the Crazy Frog, who had endured mixed fortunes
down the left all afternoon. One terrific first time strike was tipped
over by the keeper, another was sent wastefully wide. The final score,
a much needed 4-0 to Nottingham.
Man of the match: for the second week running, the Pimp. His brace of
goals lit up the second half.
Dick of the Day: for the second week running as well, Jay Byrne. His
second shocking miss in as many games. If this man ever ends up with
the club scoring record it won’t be for putting away the easy
stuff.
