Mike Allen Reports...
I've
read the match reports of the 2nds, 3rds and 4ths with admiration and
joy this season - more wealth of self-congratulation, humour and bad
English in defence of victory since we won the World Cup in 1966. However,
the reports for the 12th & 19th Feb show that NHC can not only beat
its collective chest with Tarzan-like pride in victory, but also deliver
erudition and culture.
What delicate sensitivity runs through the report of the 3rd team 'Outing'
(have they come out or are they just down & out?); what modesty
pervades the 4th team report on the match against Beeston; what scholarship
(apart from a wrongly placed apostrophe) infects Alex's view of history!
Is this the Alex whose life in education saw teachers and lecturers
line up for early retirement on grounds of stress? Is this the Alex
whose play on the pitch brought tears into the eyes of his coaches (I
remember it well)? Ou sont les neiges d'antan?
A week away on the ski slopes has done little to prepare me for such
gems of culture. Long may they continue to show the Midlands hockey
world what greatness lies at Goosedale!
