4th October 2007 - Cup Round 2
Nottingham 2 Stourport 4
Into the second round after an unconvincing victory over Leicester, we came up against last year’s runners-up (and previous two year’s semi-finalists) Stourport. It’s safe to say, we could probably name more of their players than they could of ours, at least those known for their hockey achievements rather than profanity-strewn match reports. And whilst he wasn’t wearing it, we all knew than Shawani had an Olympic gold medal in the bottom drawer at home.
So finding ourselves two-down after 20 minutes wasn’t a huge suprise to us or them. But as the first half wore on and the third that would have killed it failed to appear, Nottingham’s confidence grew. And when Nottingham scored just after half-time, Stourport visibly upped their game and the tempo. And when Llewelyn scored his second with a speculative punt at goal which took a kindly deflection, they were positively rattled. Belief swept through Nottingham like a rash until a dose of reality was reimposed with ten minutes to play and Stourport took control to play out the final few minutes in comfort.
