Barford Tigers 1 Nottingham 8
It
seemed ages since we last played Barford in that ill-tempered
affair at Goosedale in the late September sun. Mike Allen got all teachery
and wanted to give some detentions for poor behaviour. The main Barford
protagonist that afternoon turned out to be umpire rather than player
on the return fixture, and the main problem he faced was sorting the
lights out rather than lighting the touchpaper.
The
game was set fairly early on when Nottm took a two-goal lead after 10
minutes and looked comfortable. After scoring two, the main objective
of the afternoon was to conceed a short corner to allow Nottm Fourths
to make history by becoming the first league team to wear face protection
at a short corner. So after after 15 minutes, history was made when
Kaye replaced his 'ratter / Victor Meldrew cap' for a Notts batting
helmet and Young helped reduce the shine from his head with an helmet
in Aussie green. The short went wide.
In
the second half, Young showed the value of the new rule with a glorious
pull shot from another short which thundered into the side board on
its way to a boundary. He's not lost it.
The
rest of the game was a slow procession to victory. Barford did pull
it back to 2-1 before half-time with a run from their main playmaker
into the D, but the result was never really in doubt. Goals steadily
came from Byrne (3 and a jug), Lagerberg (2), Marks, Rogers.
Great
anticipation in the pub for the post game grub ended in disappointment
as sandwiches and chips appeared rather than the chicken curry (with
japaties & naan) that the thirds enjoyed. Barford were excellent
hosts.
