Northampton
1 Nottingham 6
Having
lost the week before we feared the worst, but miraculously Coventry
slipped up and promotion was still in our hands. Northampton, already
relegated, were playing for pride and started off with a huddle and
some kind of prime-evil chant to try and challenge the raw nerve-endings
of the 5th team. We conceded an early goal against the run of play and
momentarily tasted the insipid flavour of failure. However, whereas
in the past we would have felt sorry for ourselves and indulged in some
mid-afternoon handbag shopping, an inner-strength prevailed and we led
2-1 at the break through goals from Edward (majestic despite another
hard spell of pre-match gardening) and Graham.
The second half was a victory parade as Northampton wilted under the
barrage of free-flowing assaults on their net. 6-1 was the final result
with a hatrick from Graham (17 in the season to claim the "golden
gob") and further goals from Robin and James, both back from mid-season
rejuvenation breaks. Giles, Thommo, Donald, Jim, Ben and Duncan (remarkably
awarded players' player) provided security at the back. Tim and Greg
had great games in midfield and the goal-scorers have previously been
mentioned - clinical boys. Watch out Rogers.
The 4th's deserved collection of the Ben Ridding trophy has been over-shadowed
by the 5th's achievements and who knows what is possible next
season. Donald we love you..
